*Spoilers Inside (it’s history though so not really) *

One man. 75 lives. One prayer.

“Lord, please help me get one more”

Andrew Garfield suits up in Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge, but not as the web slinger we’ve known. This time, as Desmond Doss. Receiving two Oscars and being nominated for many more this film is truly a testament to the courage that is found in war, and where, or rather in who, it is found.

Fact

The real Desmond Doss was a Medal of Honor receiver and conscientious objector in the conflict in the pacific in the Second World War famous for staying behind alone in an active combat zone, dragging seventy five wounded to a cliff and lowering them down, all without firing or even carrying a weapon.

War

The film first invites us into Desmonds conflict as he objects to train with or even carry a firearm, opposing an evil sweeping the globe that will not be stopped by any other force. This internal conflict haunts Desmond throughout the film as he faces adversity from the enemy but also from within his own battalion for his beliefs. And that is a very important theme in this film as well, belief. Desmond does not deny that the horrors being committed by the enemy have left no room for diplomatic measures, but he still cannot bring himself to kill another man believing that God could still use him in this conflict. Desmond attributes his heroic acts to God giving him the strength and courage to save those men. Saying the real heroes died over there.

Courage

The primary emotion present after finishing this film is shock. Shock at first at the horrors of war, but primarily shock in the efforts of one man. How could one man Have made such a difference? How could one man drag 75 wounded men through a active battlefield by himself? How could one man persevere through the fields of ashes and death armed with nothing but prayer? Desmond doss’s story is the story of a hero. One who put his life on the line for those who scorned him facing insurmountable odds to save lives thought to be lost. It is important for us to hear these stories for several reasons but these two come to mind as most significant

  1. It is inspiring to hear these stories amazing things that can be done by someone who in the face of evil responds with strength equivalent to its fury

  2. We live in an era where we are running out of these voices. It is vital that we remember the sacrifice and the courage of those who gave their life that we could live.

Based on your recommendation, I watched this movie. It was AMAZING! I was really surprised how they could take something so violent and make it, not about the violence, but about the story.
